AWS Cloud Engineer
Location: Washington, DC, United States. Remote work allowed.
Compensation: Up to $70 per hour, depending on experience.
Opportunity: Temporary-to-full-time, with an initial assignment of up to 1,480 total hours.
BUILD SOLUTIONS THAT MATTER:
At SolutionsMET, we connect people, technology, and delivery to help organizations solve complex problems and advance their missions. We bring practical engineering and a collaborative approach to secure modernization, with a focus on making technology work for the people who use it.
THE OPPORTUNITY:
Build your next chapter with SolutionsMET through a temporary role with the opportunity to transition to a regular full-time position.
Help turn promising ideas into secure, usable analytics capabilities. SolutionsMET is supporting a federal innovation lab with an AWS-based platform serving applications at different stages, from early prototypes to production-ready deployments. The work brings together cloud infrastructure, commercial software integration, cybersecurity, and delivery automation to help teams put emerging capabilities into practice.
ABOUT THE ROLE:
Join SolutionsMET as an AWS Cloud Engineer embedded in cross-functional, scaled Agile teams. You will help build and strengthen the AWS foundation behind this evolving application portfolio, supporting secure networking, identity and access management, application onboarding, and automated deployments. As mission priorities evolve, you will contribute across applications and collaborate with other specialists to prepare solutions for reliable operation.
You will collaborate with developers, data scientists, security specialists, client staff, and other contract partners to translate technical needs into reliable cloud environments. Your work will combine infrastructure engineering, DevSecOps, and ongoing operational support, balancing the pace of experimentation with federal security requirements, approved technology standards, and clear documentation.
Working within the federal program’s scaled Agile delivery framework, you will participate in sprint planning, daily standups, reviews, and retrospectives; coordinate infrastructure dependencies across teams; and communicate progress, risks, and technical constraints. You will help teams remove deployment blockers, maintain secure development and test environments, and support the transition of prototypes into approved operational environments.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Cloud engineering and infrastructure:
- Build, integrate, and deploy cloud environments supporting data science and emerging technology prototypes, including multi-cloud integration where required.
- Automate infrastructure provisioning, system hardening, routine operations, and ongoing maintenance.
- Develop and maintain infrastructure as code using approved tools such as AWS CDK or CloudFormation.
- Design and maintain VPCs, subnet segmentation, routing, and least-privilege IAM policies.
CI/CD and DevSecOps:
- Establish and maintain CI/CD pipelines with security controls integrated throughout the delivery process.
- Build and manage container images and deployments using Docker, ECS, and EKS.
- Automate deployments across development, test, and production environments.
- Integrate static and dynamic application security testing, dependency scanning, and container scanning.
- Manage secrets and secure application and infrastructure configurations.
Operations and compliance:
- Support efforts to obtain and maintain Authority to Operate (ATO) for prototypes, including server and database compliance activities.
- Implement identity management and automate maintenance and patching through scripting.
- Collaborate with the security team to align infrastructure with enterprise security controls and relevant NIST standards.
- Contribute to cloud cost monitoring and optimization.
Collaboration and documentation:
- Participate in sprint planning, daily standups, reviews, and retrospectives within the federal program's scaled Agile delivery framework.
- Collaborate professionally with client staff, other vendors, and project stakeholders.
- Maintain operational runbooks, system designs, infrastructure configurations, and other technical documentation.
- Work within the federal agency's approved technology stack, including AWS GovCloud/Commercial, Docker, EKS, Python, and GitLab/GitHub. Use only agency-approved tools and software.
RELEVANT EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
- Hands-on cloud infrastructure engineering experience, including AWS networking, IAM, and infrastructure automation.
- Experience with infrastructure as code, preferably AWS CDK or CloudFormation.
- Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using GitLab or GitHub.
- Practical experience with Docker and container orchestration, including ECS or EKS.
- Python scripting and automation skills.
- Experience with security scanning, secrets management, system hardening, and patching.
- Familiarity with NIST security controls and federal ATO support processes.
- Strong troubleshooting, communication, and technical documentation skills.
- Experience with AWS GovCloud, federal technology environments, multi-cloud integration, and cloud cost optimization is helpful.
ASSIGNMENT AND HOURS:
- This is a temporary-to-full-time opportunity.
- The initial assignment offers up to 1,480 total hours of work, with the possibility of transitioning to a regular full-time position with SolutionsMET.
- Conversion is not guaranteed.
- The 1,480-hour limit is the maximum authorized effort for the initial assignment, not a guarantee of hours.
- Accurate time tracking and prior written approval for any additional hours are required.
